The Banishment Of Louie Gohmert

This was a long time coming.  It would be easy to dismiss Louie Gohmert as just another loony Tea Party/Republican, except that as a member of the House of Representatives he actually gets to vote on and propose legislation – that makes him dangerous. 

Gohmert is a classic example of the dangers of gerrymandering.  He was serving as a judge, (thanks to a Rick Perry appointment), when the Republicans did an unprecedented mid-decade redistricting in Texas.  This was aided and financed in part by then Republican House Majority Leader – and subsequent convicted felon – Tom DeLay in 2003.  Prior to the gerrymandering the Texas delegation to the United States House of Representatives was 17-15 Democratic.  After the gerrymandering and the 2004 election it became 21 to 11 Republican.  The gerrymandering created such safe Republican districts that a Gohmert becomes almost impossible to defeat.

Gohmert goes beyond being a conservative and is a glaring example of the radical Right Wing!  He is against embryonic stem cell research, funding Planned Parenthood, regulating the sub-prime mortgage industry, prohibiting job discrimination based on sexual orientation, making anti-gay crimes hate crimes, assisting workers who lose their jobs to globalization, requiring lobbyists to disclose the sources of bundled donations, requiring Medicare to negotiate the price of drug purchases under Medicare Part D, unemployment compensation, a minimum wage increase and the Executive Branch having to get FISA court authorization to wiretap American citizens domestically.  He favors: a balanced budget amendment with a 3/5 provision for override, photo ID in federal elections, and building a fence along the border with Mexico.

Gohmert’s voting record includes: voting against the auto bailout, the debt limit increase, renewal of the Violence Against Women Act and Sandy relief aid.  He supported the Ryan Budget.  Keep reading – we haven’t hit the good stuff yet.

Like all Tea Party people, Gohmert claims to be a patriotic defender of the Constitution.  He appears a little confused when it comes to the 14^th Amendment.  He promoted personhood legislation going so far as to grant the pre-born standing under the Amendment.  Yet he has railed against “anchor babies” and has gone so far as to claim that there is a vast conspiracy to give birth to “terror babies”.  According to Louie pregnant terrorists are coming to America to give birth to American citizens only to take them home to raise them as terrorists so that they may freely return to America as adults and commit terrorist acts.  When challenged by CNN, Fox Business News and the Washington Post he claims to have been informed by an FBI agent who he cannot identify and a fellow passenger on a flight who also cannot be identified.  Therefore he wants to be selective about who gets citizenship by virtue of being born in America, which is a key provision of the 14^th Amendment.

While we can question Gohmert’s sanity we cannot question his radical Right Wing standing.  He recently called Republican Arizona senator John McCain, “Numbnuts”.  I guess McCain is too liberal for him.

Gohmert does not believe that man has influenced climate change.  He feels the evidence is fraudulent.  In 2012 during a House Natural Resources Committee session he stated that he supported the trans-Alaskan pipeline because it would result in more sex for caribou.  That gives a new meaning to a policy he supports: Drill, Baby, Drill.

I’m certain it comes as no surprise that Gohmert has signed Grover Norquist’s, Americans for Tax Reform Pledge.  In 2009 Gohmert co-sponsored HR 1503 which was a birth certificate bill.  No surprise there either – Louie is a birther.

Gohmert is a gun guy.  He thinks we need more of them.  In the aftermath of the Aurora, Colorado shooting he made the following statement: “It does make me wonder, with all those people in the theater, was there nobody that was carrying a gun that could have stopped this guy more quickly.”  The shooter was wearing body armor and does Gohmert really think that turning a dark movie theater into a free fire zone is a good idea?  Not learning from his mistakes, this was his statement during his appearance on Fox News Sunday when referring to the Principal at Sandy Hook Elementary School he said, “… I wish to God she had, had an M-4 in her office locked up so when she heard the gunfire she pulls it out”.

With 2013 less than 90 days old the lunacy has not let up.  Gohmert voted for Alan West for Speaker of the House.  Gohmert’s fellow Tea Partier West, a self-admitted war criminal, had lost his well financed bid for re-election and was no longer a member of the House.

In the last few days Gohmert followed it up with this defense of automatic weapons and high capacity clips: “We’ve got some people who think Sharia law oughta be the law of the land, forget the Constitution.  But guns are there, the Second Amendment is there, to make sure all of the rest of the amendments are followed.”  This is like something right out of Dick Cheney’s playbook; something scary sounding with no basis in fact.

So unless you are a caribou during mating season Louie Gohmert is someone to be feared.  If you live in Texas’ First Congressional District be a true patriot and vote against him in November of 2014.  For right now Louie, enjoy your time in Harry’s Hell; your buddy Alan West is waiting for you.
