Truman – David McCullough
With my interest in President Truman this was a must! David McCullough is generally regarded as perhaps THE presidential biographer. At a length of over 900 pages, many of them sporting small print, this is not a quick read. McCullough explores the character of Truman along with his decisions. If you don’t learn from this book you’re not trying. If you don’t come away from it with even more respect for Harry Truman, the man, you should consider registering as a Republican.
A word of caution, do not begin to pass judgment on his book until you have the first hundred pages or so behind you. If there is a fault it is that too much attention has been paid to Truman’s ancestors, but McCullough’s obvious contention is that it helped shape the man.
