This is not a “reply”, this is a comment. I hope that’s OK.
Sean Hannity is screaming about the probability that the “Muslim Brotherhood” will end up being the controling force in Egypt and that their (assumed) ultra-fundamentalist Islamic (Sharia) laws will be the cause of instability in that country. Just as he and his ilk believe that it is the Ayatollas and their ultra-fundamentalist followers who are the reason for the “instability” emanating from Iran.
But the fundamentalists are not the cause of the instability. Our historic support for despots is the cause. We supported Mubarak for 30 years. And we support the Shah of Iran for 26 years. And we supported Saddam Hussain for 20ish years. And we support the despot in Pakistan. And the despot in Afghanistan. And we supported the despot in Chile…and Nicaragua and elsewhere in central and south America…and Africa too. And we supported Marcos in the Phillipines. And we are supporting the despot in China right now! China owns a third of out national debt. How long does anyone think it will be before they decide that they own enough of our debt to decide to send us foreclosure papers by registered mail? And when that happens will we pay off that debt quickly by cutting back the military or all the other bullshit things on which we spend our money? No! We’ll pay for it by eliminating Social Security and Medicare, and Medicaid, and public education, and unemployment, etc.
Well, maybe that’ll be good. Then, when the debt is paid, the disposessed American peasants (and there will be millions of them/us) will rise up like they did in Egypt and throw the bastards out.
Think maybe then we can start getting our shit together?
