You Stll Own It Pat

I saw this one coming like a 3 and 0 fastball.  On Wednesday Republican North Carolina de jure Governor Pat McCrory issued the following statement: “The issues surrounding the transfer of the assets of the Ashville water department to a regional authority potentially raise a number of complicated inter-governmental issues.  The City of Ashville has made it clear it will turn to the courts to resolve those issues should HB488 become law.  To permit the process to run its proper course, HB488 will become law without my signature.”  Continue reading

An Attempt At Further Abdication

While the conservatives claim to be the defenders of the Constitution in practice it is the progressives who are.  We may not play dress-up and wear three cornered hats, but when rhetoric gives way to reality it is the political left that wants to live by our founding document.  One of the points where we tend to become real adherents to the basic law of the land is when it comes to waging war. The Banishment Of Phil Gingrey

In 1979 the Charlie Daniels Band had a hit record entitled The Devil Went Down To Georgia.  I certainly don’t pretend to be an expert on the devil’s itinerary, but looking at the Republican wannabes for the 2014 United States Senate seat race in Georgia it looks like he may have left some agents behind.  Today we will banish another of them to our version of the devil’s abode – Harry’s Hell.    Continue reading

Bye, Bye Benghazi

It is Wednesday morning as I pen this article and one of the big anticipated news items of the day is the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee’s hearing on Benghazi.  If the events of September 11, 2012 didn’t include the deaths of four Americans I would say this reminds me of the title of a Shakespearian comedy – Much Ado About Nothing.  Politically this will be the net result of Chairman Darrell Issa’s, (R, CA-49), act in this right wing play.    Continue reading

Double Barrel Misfires

Here is an analogy question complete with solution: 2011 is to 2013 as Madison, Wisconsin is to Raleigh, North Carolina.  In 2011 Scott Walker and a Republican majority took over the Governor’s mansion and both chambers of the Wisconsin Legislature.  They quickly, (because Wisconsin has a recall law), began passing radical legislation.  In 2013 Pat McCrory and a Republican super-majority took over the Governor’s mansion and both chambers of the North Carolina Legislature.  They are in the process of passing, ridiculous and detrimental legislation that will negatively impact North Carolina for years to come.  Continue reading

A Good Night’s Sleep

Today is the special election in South Carolina’s First Congressional District to replace now Senator Tim Scott in the House of Representatives.  It has gotten a lot of press because it has been a sexy news item.  The storyline is great.  Disgraced former South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford is the Republican candidate running against Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch.  She is the sister of celebrity Stephen Colbert who pronounces his name differently than she does.  This one has watercooler conversation written all over it.  Continue reading

Let’s Get Real

There is a good reason that this site does not include an essay on immigration: it is a very complex issue and I don’t profess to have anywhere near all the answers.  That being said, I feel comfortable writing about another piece of the puzzle today.  In this case, the financial price to be paid.  Continue reading

The Sequester Comes To A Small Town Near You

The right wing noise machine has attacked President Obama as a fear monger.  They claim the Sequester is a nothing and that Obama was just out to scare everybody.  The more enlightened among us knew that was just their spin machine grinding away again.  The Sequester is simply too large not to negatively impact the overwhelming majority of Americans.  Continue reading

A Question Of Sufficent Sanity

The longest list in Washington may well be the list of candidates for the craziest member of the 113th Congress.  I will not attempt to publish a complete and comprehensive listing of them here; instead I will concentrate on two that must be on high the leader board – Republicans Senator James Inhofe of Oklahoma and Representative Frank Lucas of Oklahoma’s Third Congressional District. Continue reading

The Endorsement Of Ed Markey

2013 doesn’t promise to be a big year for endorsements; there simply are not that many elections that are going to be held and I don’t endorse for every election.  With Tuesday night’s primaries in Massachusetts history, the choice for Bay State voters on June 25th is clear and I endorse Democratic Representative Ed Markey for the United States Senate.  While this may be the easiest decision I make in 2013 let’s explore the reasons behind it.
